Getting Ready for Roof Replacement Day: A Homeowner Checklist

Roofing work at a two-story home with ladders and a debris trailer in the driveway.

The takeaway: A clear access plan and one reliable contact make replacement day easier to manage.

Plan the day around your household

A roof replacement changes the rhythm of the house. Before the crew arrives, think through the ordinary things that still need to happen: getting to work, walking the dog, receiving deliveries, and leaving for appointments.

The goal is a clear plan that everyone can follow. Confirm the details with your contractor rather than assuming that another homeowner’s project schedule or setup will match yours.

Share the plan with anyone who helps at the house. A caregiver, dog walker, or visiting relative may need the same access information as the people who live there.

Several days before: settle the access questions

Ask where materials and any waste container will go, which entrance the household should use, and what space the crew needs. Point out anything you want the contractor to consider when planning protection around the property.

Make a simple sketch if your driveway, gates, or parking arrangement is complicated. A marked photo can be easier to understand than a long explanation delivered while equipment is arriving.

The day before: make room for the work

GAF’s homeowner preparation guidance recommends moving outdoor belongings away from the roof perimeter and planning for noise and vibration indoors. Discuss protection for delicate landscaping and other fixed features with the contractor.

Handle only ordinary, ground-level household tasks yourself. Ask the contractor how to address belongings in attic storage rather than entering the attic to prepare, and leave rooftop equipment to the appropriate professionals.

The morning of: avoid last-minute surprises

Put your main contact’s number somewhere easy to find and make sure they have yours. If you will be away, say when you expect to be unavailable and how a time-sensitive question should reach you.

Check that everyone in the household understands the agreed entrance and restricted work areas. Ask guests and delivery drivers to contact you instead of walking into the construction area to find someone.

If your day depends on a specific departure time, mention it beforehand. A brief conversation about access is easier than discovering that the item you need is behind a parked vehicle or a materials delivery.

During the project: keep one clear communication channel

Collect nonurgent questions in a short note so you can discuss them together with the designated contact. For anything that affects access or immediate safety, speak up promptly and follow the crew’s site directions.

If the contractor identifies additional work, ask for a clear description and supporting photographs before discussing next steps. You should be able to understand what was found, where it is, and what decision is being requested without climbing onto the roof.

Before returning the yard to normal

Arrange a ground-level walkthrough after the contractor says the work area is ready. Ask about remaining debris, any items that still need attention, and when outdoor spaces can be used normally again.

Keep the final project information together: the products installed, available photographs, care guidance, and the contact for later questions. If something looks unfinished, describe the exact location and ask how it will be addressed.

Finally, update your household plan if a separate provider still needs to return. A roof project is easier to wrap up when the remaining appointments and responsibilities are written down in one place.
